Stiff Senior Dog? 6 Checks Before You Buy Anything

Stiffness in an older dog usually shows up in the small things first — a pause at the bottom of the stairs, a shorter jump onto the couch, a slower first walk of the morning. Before buying anything, there are six checks worth running: two on your dog, four on whatever you are about to buy. They take ten minutes and they will save you from most of what is sold to worried owners.

First, check your dog — not the product

Check 1 — Write down what actually changed. Note three specific things: stairs, jumping onto furniture, and the first five minutes of the morning walk. Owners tend to judge progress by memory, and memory is generous. A dated note beats a feeling every time, and it is also what your vet will ask for.

Check 2 — Rule out the things a supplement cannot fix. Sudden limping, yelping, heat or swelling in a joint, or a change that appeared overnight are veterinary questions, not shopping questions. A supplement supports normal function in a healthy dog; it does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease, and no honest brand will tell you otherwise.

Then check the product

Check 3 — Milligrams per DAILY DOSE, not per container. « 12,000 mg! » on a front label is almost always per bottle. Divide it by the servings and it can shrink to very little per day. The only number that matters is what your dog gets today.

Check 4 — Does the dose scale with your dog's weight? Dogs run from 4 lb to 140 lb. A product with one fixed serving is rounding for most of them. A weight-based chart in millilitres is the sign of a formula designed for real dogs.

Check 5 — Any « proprietary blend » is a refusal to answer. A blend lists ingredients without individual amounts, so a formula can be mostly filler and remain legal. If the label will not print the milligrams of each ingredient, treat that as the answer.

Check 6 — Comfort is not only what you feed. Where an older dog sleeps and how he is walked change day-to-day comfort as much as anything in a bottle. A bed that lets him settle without bracing, and a harness that pulls from the chest rather than the neck, are not accessories to a supplement — they are the other two thirds of the problem.
