Dog Collagen Serving Guide and How to Read the Label With Confidence

By the Kollavia editorial team. Updated October 2026.
Most supplement labels give you plenty of numbers and very little help in using them. This dog collagen serving guide walks through the three things worth checking on any label, namely what is in a serving, how much your dog should get, and how long a bottle will last at that amount. We use the Kollavia label as the worked example, because it is the one we can vouch for line by line.
Start with the serving, not the bottle
Kollavia Liquid Collagen for Dogs comes in a 60 ml bottle. Each 2 ml serving contains 400 mg of hydrolyzed collagen (types I, II and III), 20 mg of glucosamine HCl and 10 mg of hyaluronic acid. The collagen comes from pasture-raised, grass-fed cattle.
Bottle sizes vary a lot between brands, so a big number on the front tells you little. What you can compare is the amount in one serving, and then the amount in one day for a dog of your dog's size. "Hydrolyzed" only means the collagen has been broken into smaller pieces called peptides so that it mixes into a liquid.
The serving guide by weight
The daily amount follows body weight. The table also shows what each day's amount contains, worked out from the per-2 ml figures on the label, and how many days one 60 ml bottle lasts.
| Dog's weight | Daily amount | Active amounts in that day | One 60 ml bottle lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5 lb (under 2 kg) | 1 ml | 200 mg collagen, 10 mg glucosamine HCl, 5 mg hyaluronic acid | 60 days |
| 5-15 lb (2-7 kg) | 2 ml | 400 mg collagen, 20 mg glucosamine HCl, 10 mg hyaluronic acid | 30 days |
| 15-35 lb (7-16 kg) | 3 ml | 600 mg collagen, 30 mg glucosamine HCl, 15 mg hyaluronic acid | 20 days |
| Over 35 lb (over 16 kg) | 4 ml | 800 mg collagen, 40 mg glucosamine HCl, 20 mg hyaluronic acid | 15 days |
Give the daily amount once a day, poured over your dog's food. The kilogram bands are the ones used on our UK pages, so they are rounded from the pound bands. If your dog sits right on a boundary, ask your veterinarian which band to follow.
Working out how long a bottle lasts
Divide 60 by the daily millilitres. A 28 lb dog is in the 3 ml band, so 60 divided by 3 gives 20 days. A dog over 35 lb uses 4 ml a day and gets 15 days from a bottle. A small dog under 5 lb gets two months from the same bottle.
This is also the quickest way to compare prices honestly. Divide the price you pay by the number of days the bottle lasts for your dog. A bottle that is cheaper on the shelf can cost more per day, and a larger dog will always go through a bottle faster than a smaller one.
Questions to put to any dog supplement label
- Is the amount given per serving, and does the label say exactly what a serving is?
- Do the directions change with your dog's weight, or is it one size for every dog?
- Are the collagen types named, and is the source animal stated? Ours is bovine, so tell your veterinarian first if your dog has a known beef allergy.
- Does the label stay away from promises to treat or cure a disease? In the United States, the FDA treats a product that claims to treat or prevent a disease as a drug, not as a food or supplement (FDA on regulation of pet food).
What a label cannot tell you
A label tells you what is in the bottle. It cannot tell you whether a supplement will make a difference for your dog, and the research on joint supplements for dogs is mixed. Our ingredient checklist for dog joint supplements goes through what studies have and have not shown. If your dog has a diagnosed condition or new symptoms, speak to your veterinarian before starting anything. Kollavia is safe alongside all medications.
